Top 5 Things to Know about Elena Scarlata

Graphic and textile designer, Elena Scarlata, is known for her Mediterranean inspired fabrics and home decorations. Her designs are hand-printed onto sustainable fabrics, before being transformed into textile products by skilled Italian seamstresses.
After gaining experience working for multinational companies, Elena returned to her native Italy, where she lives and works happily in her workshop overlooking the sea.

What’s your fondest memory from your time at UAL?

I really enjoyed my time at LCC because the teacher was amazing. He taught me not only a different way to think about design, but a new way to explore design with new eyes, he changed my mind forever.

How did your company come about?

My company came to fruition after studying at LCC and working for several multinational companies in the communication and interior design field in London. I wanted to find ways to convert my ideas into reality, so I came back to Italy and grew my business.Who or what inspires you?

My inspiration comes from my Mediterranean origin, Sicily as well as tradition and heritage translated in a new graphic way.

What was the inspiration behind your latest collection? 

My inspiration for the latest collection comes from old terracotta tiles.

What purchase have you currently got your eye on? 

I’m always looking for objects from nature, from the sea and old handmade tiles.Where is your most inspiring place in London? 

I love spending my time at the V&A museum; I love studying all the archives from textiles and ceramics to design and fashion.

What advice would you give current students hoping to start their own business?

I encourage students to follow their flow and natural attitude with courage and hard work!

What’s next for your brand?

Eco-friendly cushions that increase our lifestyle and levels of relaxation, from sea to sofa!
